Guest Post: Mohawk – Insights Into the Future of Paper & Print

Published 01/09/2017

Printing is a dynamic industry, with new trends and technology constantly emerging.

Ned Cleary, District Sales Manager at Mohawk, North America's largest privately owned manufacturer of fine papers, envelopes and specialty substrates for commercial and digital printing, was kind enough to share his insights with Integrity Graphics and its divisions about the design, paper and printing business and where he sees the industry trending in the New Year.

Here are some industry insights and key takeaways for 2017:

What trends are you seeing in paper and printing for the New Year?

People are printing again and they want it to be special. Our business is growing.

What do you see for the future of print?

The future is bright. We need to stop being fearful of the end of print. It is not happening. We have a whole generation that has grown up with sensory overload from an electronic device. Those devices are the commodity. Paper and print are different and cool.

How many varieties of paper do you offer?

We offer literally hundreds, from white smooth all the way to the most textured dark colors you could imagine. Our product portfolio is made up from many acquisitions over the years.

What are some of the latest offerings in your product portfolio?

We continue to add digital products and took over the distribution of the Curious line of products this year which gives us a translucent, metallic and other very interesting finishes.

Are any new products set to be unveiled in 2017?

Of course. We are always looking for new differentiated products whether it is to make a better product than the one already on the market or to be compatible with some new print technology.

What are some of your staple pieces?

Superfine has been our flagship brand for more than 50 years. Its formation and tactile feel is second to none in the market.

What effect does paper selection have on a printed piece?

It is the most important, right there with the craftsmanship of the printer. The right paper can enhance a brand, stir the senses and increase ROI for your customer.

How do you go about choosing the right paper for your project?

It all depends on what you are trying to accomplish. Use texture and color when you want to separate yourself from the crowd. It is a labor of love and not one that should be determined by a budget.

What is the key to a successfully completed print project?

Achieving what the customer wants. Print is purposeful; make sure you understand your clients’ needs and deliver on them.

What is the most exciting aspect of your industry?

For Mohawk, it is that we believe our purpose is to make print more beautiful, effective and memorable. That is our ethos and what we wake up every day to do whether we are making paper on the mill floor or collaborating with a printer or designer on what will make their client a star. Paper and print are alive and well. We are excited to be a fourth generation family owned business and look forward to many more years of success.
